How do I set up the app and sign in?

Updated 15 October 2026

Setup takes under a minute, and there's no password — pick whichever sign-in suits you.

  1. Download ReceiptWave from the App Store or Google Play and open it.
  2. Choose how to sign in:
    • Sign in with Apple (iPhone) — one tap, no password.
    • Continue with email — enter your email and tap Send sign-in link (or the Send key on your keyboard); we email you a sign-in link; tap it and you're in. No password needed. The link works even if the app was closed when you tapped it. With the latest version of the app, tapping Sign in in the email opens the app straight away. If your phone opens a ReceiptWave page in your browser instead (older versions of the app do this), tap Open ReceiptWave on that page and the app opens and signs you in. The same email also carries a six-digit code. If the button doesn't open the app — which happens with some email apps, particularly on Android — type the code into the app instead. It works the same way and expires at the same time. The app signs you in as soon as you've typed all six digits (you can also tap Sign in with code). If you fix one digit of a code you've already typed, tap Sign in with code to try it. Tap anywhere outside the box to put the keyboard away, or Back at the top (or your phone's back button on Android) to change your email address. If the app says "That code is not valid. Request a new one.", check the digits; five wrong tries and the code stops working, so tap "Didn't receive it? Try again" for a fresh email. For your security, the link and the code work only on the phone where you asked for them. Open the email on that phone, or type the code there. On another phone or a computer, ask for a new link on the phone you're holding instead.
  3. Accept the Terms & Conditions — every way of signing in, the code included, brings you here first. Then read how claiming a receipt works, tap Got it, and you're ready — receipts you tap now land in the app. You're signed in by this point, so there's no going back to the email screen from here.
  4. Choose whether to turn on notifications. The app tells you what they're for, and your phone only asks for permission if you tap Turn on notifications. Tap Not now to skip it and go straight to your receipts. See "How do I turn notifications on or off?" for how to change it later.

If it says "Sign-in didn't finish"

You'll see this if the sign-in was interrupted — you closed the panel, or it stopped part-way for some other reason. Nothing is wrong with your account and nothing has been saved or changed.

Tap the button again. If it happens twice, use Continue with email instead: we'll send you a sign-in link and a six-digit code, and either will get you in. (If Sign in with Apple or Google fails outright, the app says "Couldn't sign you in with Apple" or "with Google", and the same advice applies.) If that also fails, email support@receiptwave.com and tell us roughly what time you tried — we keep a record of failed sign-in attempts and can look yours up.

If it says "We could not load the terms"

We need to show you our terms before you start, so the app waits until it can. Check your connection and tap Try again. If you'd rather stop for now, tap Sign out — you can sign in again later. If it still will not load, email hello@receiptwave.com and we will help.

If it says "Couldn't sign you in" after you tap the link

The app couldn't reach us to check your link — usually a weak connection. Your link may still be good: check your connection, then tap the link in the email again. If the screen says Link expired instead, the link has run out or has already been used, so tap Try again and ask for a new one.

If it asks "Sign in with this link?"

We ask before using a sign-in link that this phone can't confirm it asked for — for example, one you asked for a while ago, from an older version of the app, or one our support team sent you. If you did ask for it, tap Sign in with this link. If you didn't, tap Cancel: nothing changes, and nobody is signed in. A link you asked for on this phone in the last 30 minutes signs you straight in.

If it says "Open this on the phone you asked from"

You opened the email on a different phone from the one where you tapped Send sign-in link. To keep your account safe, the link and its code only work on that phone. Nothing has been used up:

  1. Open the same email on the phone where you asked, and tap the link — or type the code into the app there.
  2. Or, to sign in on the phone you're holding, tap Ask for a new link here and use the newest email on this phone.

If the code box says "This code works only on the phone where you asked for it", the same applies: type the code on that phone, or send a new link to this one.

If it says "You're already signed in"

You tapped a sign-in link while you were signed in. The screen shows the start of the email address you're signed in with. Tap Stay signed in as … to carry on as you are — the link isn't used. Tap Sign in with this link only if you meant to switch to another account.

If a banner says "We could not check for updates to our terms"

You can keep using ReceiptWave as normal. The app could not reach us to check whether our terms have changed, and it will check again next time you open it. You can tap Try again at any time. If it still cannot check after three days, the app will ask you to connect before you carry on.
